We’re looking for a Senior Geomorphologist to join our growing Hydromorphology team within APEM’s Water Management Division. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a collaborative group of geomorphologists, hydrologists, hydroecologists, fisheries specialists and environmental scientists delivering technically robust and environmentally meaningful projects across a diverse range of sectors.
Our Hydromorphology team is involved in a wide range of work including river and wetland restoration, sediment dynamics investigations, weir removals, sediment management plans and Heavily Modified Water Body assessments. The variety of projects means you’ll have the opportunity to work across different river types, catchments and restoration challenges, applying both your technical expertise and your practical field skills.
This is a genuinely varied role where you’ll take responsibility for the delivery and management of your own portfolio of geomorphology and hydromorphology projects, coordinating fieldwork, analysing complex geomorphological and sediment datasets, preparing high-quality technical reports and liaising with clients, regulators and project teams. You’ll work closely with Principal Geomorphologists, who will provide support on broader strategic, commercial and technical leadership matters, while giving you the autonomy to manage projects and develop your client-facing skills.
Whether your strengths lie in river restoration, sediment management, catchment investigations, physical habitat assessment or geomorphological interpretation, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute across the full project lifecycle while continuing to broaden your technical expertise and develop towards future technical and project leadership responsibilities.
You’ll need to bring
- An MSc or above in Fluvial Geomorphology plus relevant professional experience in a consultancy, regulatory or third sector environment; or a PhD in a relevant discipline plus relevant industry experience.
- Experience supporting the development and delivery of river restoration schemes across a range of river types and project stages.
- Excellent practical understanding of geomorphological forms, processes and sediment dynamics.
- Experience undertaking fieldwork, including restoration appraisal, fluvial audits, physical habitat surveys and sediment sampling.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills applied to geomorphological investigation and interpretation.
- Experience managing or coordinating project tasks and delivering work to agreed time, cost and quality standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
It’s a bonus if you have
- Experience managing small to medium-sized projects, including multidisciplinary projects.
- Experience supporting or mentoring junior colleagues.
- Awareness of UK legislation associated with water management and river restoration.
- Experience preparing or contributing to sediment management plans.
- Experience using HEC-RAS or Flood Modeller.
- Experience with sediment transport assessment or modelling.
- Familiarity with CDM requirements.
- Experience using AutoCAD, GIS or other spatial analysis software.
- Membership of a relevant professional body and/or working towards Chartered status.
